How to Lead Your Kids in Faith—Even When You’re Still Messing Up

How to Lead Your Kids in Faith—Even When You’re Still Messing Up

Have you ever felt like you’re not “spiritual enough” to lead your kids in faith? Like maybe because you’ve yelled, lost patience, or made mistakes, you’ve disqualified yourself from teaching your children about spiritual growth? If so, you’re not alone. And the truth is—you’re exactly the kind of parent who can still lead your family toward God.

In our latest podcast episode, #324 Raising Spiritually Resilient Kids in a Chaotic & Confused World, we share how spiritual growth in families isn’t about perfection—it’s about progress. In our family, we’ve raised 7 well-adjusted kids without yelling, tantrums, punishments, or power struggles—and you can too.

But it didn’t happen because we’re perfect. It happened because we’re committed to growth

Why Your Kids Need to See You Struggle (and Keep Growing Anyway)

Sometimes as parents, we get stuck thinking:
“I can’t tell my kids to listen to God when I just lost my temper yesterday.”
Or, “Who am I to teach them spiritual things when I’m still trying to figure it out myself?”

But that’s actually the best time to teach them.

Why?

Because your kids need to see what it looks like to be human and still pursue God.

They need to see you:

  • Mess up
  • Own it
  • Repent quickly
  • Ask for forgiveness
  • And keep trying again

That’s real spiritual growth.

How Repentance Clears the “Spiritual Airways”

One of the best analogies I’ve heard is this: Imagine you’re at a movie theater, but the screen is covered with nachos, popcorn, and soda.

It’s hard to see the picture clearly because there’s junk in the way.

Sin and mistakes do the same thing to our spiritual lives.

They clog up the airways so it’s harder to hear God’s voice.

But repentance is like cleaning the screen.

It’s not meant to be heavy or shameful—it’s a daily habit of clearing out the junk so you can see and hear more clearly.

Family Revival Starts at Home

Our world is in crisis.

Families are under attack like never before—from gender confusion to the epidemic of screen addiction, to depression and suicidal ideation in kids and teens.

But here’s the good news: You are the front line of revival in your home.

If you’re praying with your kids, reading scripture together, talking about real life, and being honest about your struggles—you’re doing holy work.

This is how the next generation will rise up to be spiritually strong and resilient, even in a culture that feels upside down.

It’s Not About Perfection. It’s About Partnership.

God isn’t looking for perfect parents.

He’s looking for willing ones.

The enemy wants you to feel disqualified so you’ll stay silent.

But God is calling you to lead your children toward Him exactly as you are—flaws and all.

So, start today. Pray out loud with your kids.

Apologize when you mess up.

Talk about the hard things.

Your children don’t need a perfect parent—they need a growing one.
